Career
Willy van Eeckhoutte holds a master's degree (1975) and a doctorate (1985) in law from the University of Ghent.
Willy van Eeckhoutte is an Extraordinary Professor at Ghent University, where he has taught at the Faculty of Law since 1986, including the subjects labour law and social security law in the bachelor and master programmes respectively.
In 1975, he became a lawyer at the Bar in Ghent. In 1999, he was appointed as a lawyer at the Court of Cassation, therefore he has since been a member of the Bar of the highest Belgian court, which comprises twenty lawyers across the country.
Willy van Eeckhoutte also taught at the Gent-Leuven Management School and at the Catholic University of Leuven (course Pension Law).

Experience
Willy van Eeckhoutte has more than forty years of experience in labour and social security law, both as a professor of social law and as a lawyer.
As a lawyer, he has experience with and acts before all labour law courts as well as the Constitutional Court and the Court of Justice of the European Union. As a lawyer at the Court of Cassation, he handles cassation cases for claimants and defendants in all areas of law.
In addition to cassation cases, he has a strong preference for preparing independent, scientifically based and impartial opinions and drafts in complex social law cases.
But as a lawyers' lawyer he also assists other lawyers with specific advice. For substantive social law cases, he works together with a team of young and dynamic lawyers.

Publications and other activities
Willy van Eeckhoutte is the author of several journal articles and books on social law, including the annually published encyclopaedic five-volume Sociaal Compendium Arbeidsrecht en Socialezekerheidsrecht, which is also published in French. He also contributes to the updating of SocialEye, an online database for social law specialists and HR professionals. He is also editor of the International Encyclopaedia of Social Security Law, which provides an overview of social security law in the various countries of the world. He regularly gives lectures on current social security law issues.
